To be a woman is a hard enough lot at the best of times—but here particularly so. Poor wretched damsels, borne by injurious Fate to so inclement a shore where the islanders keep watch upon the sea to make a wicked holocaust of alien women: for the more damsels from abroad who are sacrificed, the smaller the inroads they have to make among their own womenfolk.
